What are Humates?

Humates, which are composed of various forms of carbon, are naturally occurring material that is very rich in humified organic matter and humic substances. Humates are now recognized as the single most productive input in sustainable agriculture.

Humate is a highly compressed, natural organic humus, high in humic acid and containing most of the known trace minerals necessary to the development of plant life. Such organic matter imports dark color to soils, favors granulation, enhances root development, increases water retention power and creates chelation processes whereby insoluble matter or elements are gradually released for plant utilization.

The Humate contains valuable plant nutritional substances not found in chemical fertilizers such as organic matter, carbon (the source of all plant life), chlorophyll, protein, and humic acid (which through the biochemical process of chelation makes available to plants controlled quantities of nutrients which are normally inert and unavailable to plants).

Humates can be utilized as a soil conditioner, fertilizer, and soil supplement. The continued use of humates in nitrogen depleted soils will create its own nitrogen and minimize losses to evaporation. The use of humates progressively builds up humus content in soil. Subsequent fertilization can be reduced when soils become increasingly fertile. Humates create healthy soil conditions, thereby reducing reliance upon pesticides and insecticides. Use of humates can and will correct plant disease because of the availability of inert insoluble mineral nutrients and essential trace elements through chelation. Humates are a natural product and have no chemical additives.

The Role of Humates

  1. They improve soil structure formation and assist in aeration.
  2. They change physical properties of soil and affect its water holding capacity.
  3. They affect exchange capacity and buffering properties of the soil and help govern nutrient availability.
  4. Humates are a source of plant nutrients - both macro and micronutrients.
  5. They promote the conversion (chelation) of a number of elements into forms available to plants and assist with nutrient uptake.
  6. They aid in correcting plant chlorosis because of their association with micronutrients.
  7. Humates supply compounds linked with humic substances in the form of chelates, and therefore help make soils biochemically active.
  8. They increase the permeability of plant membranes and promote the uptake of nutrients.
  9. Humates improve the growth of various groups of beneficial micro-organisms.
  10. Humates are regarded as organic catalysts.
  11. In the presence of humates, enzyme and hormone systems are intensified.
  12. Cell division is accelerated in the presence of humates, and auxin and hormone roles are intensified.
  13. Humates increase the germination capacity of seed.
  14. Root systems exhibit greater development under humate use. Plant efficiency is enhanced.
  15. Healthier, stronger plants produced with humates withstand pests more effectively.
  16. Humates decrease stress deterioration.
  17. Humates improve soil moisture conditions.

The Benefits of Organic Farming for Small Farmers

Organic farming refers to means of farming that does not involve the use of chemicals such as chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Numerous small farmers have been practicing organic farming; however, since they are unaware of the market opportunities, they are not able to reap the benefits of organic farming.

According to a research conducted by the Office of Evaluation and Studies (OE), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), small farmers in Latin America, China and India can benefit drastically from organic farming and will help in alleviating poverty in these countries. Organic farming is being groomed to end modern farmers’ struggles resulting to various debts and farming land mortgages. Below are some of the benefits of organic farming for small farmers:

Higher Premium – Prices of organic foods are usually 20-30% higher than conventional food. This higher premium would meant fair and better returns for the small farmers, many of whom are still struggling with trying to achieve better returns from their farms.

Lower Investment – Organic farming do not require high capital investment as compared to other farming methods. With the soaring costs of chemicals and fertilizers used in the farms, many farmers has now realized the benefits and financial rewards of organic farming as they use natural made compost which are free. In cases of natural calamity, pest or disease attack, and irregular rainfall, when there is a crop failure, small farmers practicing organic farming have to suffer less as their investments are lower.

Operating Costs – Further, since organic fertilizers and pesticides can be produced locally, the yearly costs incurred by the farmer are also low. Agriculture greatly depends on external factors such as climate, pests, disease. Further most of the small farmers are dependent on natural rain for water.

Lower Financial Burdens – Many small farmers worldwide are now in greater debt due to the soaring prices of chemicals, fertilizers, animal fees and fuel. Many are debt ridden. However, an organic farmer which relies on natural and self made natural fertilizers and farming methods have lesser financial burdens and risks. The increasing demand for their organic products will further strengthen their financial position.

Greater Knowledge – Small farmers have abundance of farming knowledge with them and within their community. Most of these knowledge backdates to the time when their ancestors were farming using traditional and natural ways.

Organic farming is not a new method, but one which predates to thousands of years when each family has their own land to farm and produce food. Just a century ago, there are no large scale commercial farming and there are no chemical plants that produces chemical fertilizers.

The Global Market for Organic Foods

The market for organic foods is growing dramatically. It is estimated that organic sales of food products through supermarkets, mass merchandisers and natural supermarkets was $ 3.6 billion in 2006 in the U.S., double the figure in 2000. The Organic Trade Association estimates that the total organic food and beverage sales were $ 13.8 billion in 2006.

The organic revolution is a global phenomenon witnessed in every corners of the world and countries – Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand , Turkey, UK, USA and other countries. The primary demand driver for the increased consumption of organic food is health concerns. Consumers are increasingly interested in foods that are free of pesticides, and other health risks.

Organic farming is also a viable means of sustainance for small farmers in the developing countries. Most of the organic fertilizers and pesticides requirement can be met through on-farm and local production. Hence, organic farming does not involve huge capital investments in buying fertilizers and pesticides. Small farmers, therefore, find organic farming beneficial.

Organic food are produced, processed and packaged wihtout using chemicals. Organic food is increasingly becoming popular due to its perceived health benefits over conventional food. The industry is growing rapidly since the past five years and has caught the attention of farmers, manufacturers and, above all, consumers.

Popular organic food items include organic tea, organic coffee, organic wine, organic meat, organic beef, organic milk, organic honey, organic vegetables, organic fruits, organic rice, organic corn, organic herbs, organic essential oils, organic coconut oil and organic olive oil.

The price of organic food is about 10% to even 200% higher than conventional food. However, considering the health benefits and the long term cost of medical care due to unhealthy and sometimes poisonous chemicals found on our food today, many has realized the significant benefits of organic food. How else can we explain the rising demand for organic food across the world today?

Consumers buy their organic foods from a wide variety of locations. The most common location of organic food purchases is supermarkets. Of those consumers who bought organic foods 68 percent purchased them from supermarkets; followed by natural or health food stores at 45 percent.

Organic fruits and vegetables remains the largest market of the organic food market. They are also the most popular commodities purchased by consumers. 70 percent of the consumers surveyed who has purchase organic foods, also purchased fresh vegetables while 67 percent also purchased fresh fruits. Sales of fruits and vegetables is estimated at $ 1 Billion in 2007.

Many stores buy the organic food direct from the farms. The price of a food item in an organic food store depends on whether the stores are able to buy them in bulk discount prices direct from the farmers or wholesalers. There are 1000s of organic farms around the world that has open their doors to visitors and tourists and they offer both the experience and information on organic food and the farming methods.

If you are buying organic food for yourself or your family, you can find the nearest organic store in your area through the Internet. Most of these online stores also provides valuable information on the organic foods they are selling as well as the nutritional value, recipes and cooking methods.

The Importance of Organic Vegetable Gardening

Organic vegetable gardening seems to be the trend these days as more people have become conscious of what they are eating. This is because conventional methods which involve the use of harmful chemicals may enter our systems.

In order to control the problem, the US Department of Agriculture has issues a new directive. This encourages farmers to shift to organic farming.

With organic farming, farmers will no longer need to plant crops using genetic engineering, irradiation and sewage sludge. Instead, this will be replaced with crop rotation.

Crop rotation is the practice of planting a different crop in the same area where another crop once occupied. This keeps the soil’s nutrients fertile so it can be used again in the following season.

If you think about it, this approach is easier said than done as farmers are accustomed to the old ways of doing it. To help them change their minds, the government offers incentives and subsidies to farmers who decide to follow this plan.

But the main reason why organic vegetable gardening is so important is the fact that the crops harvested have 50% more nutrients and vitamins compared to that of conventional farming methods.

This means the food they consume will reduce the risk of people suffering from a number of diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers.

Children who drink milk will be able to get more anti-oxidants, CLA, Omega 3 and vitamins when this is extracted from pastured grazed cows that will really strengthen their bones and muscles.

You can buy organically grown vegetables from the supermarket. The sad part is the almost everywhere you go, although the packaging comes from Department of Health, Quality Assurance International, California Certified Organic Farmers or the Oregon Tilth Farm Verified Organic, most of these are only 50% to 70% organic.

This is why homeowners who want to eat 100% organic vegetables are encouraged to grow these themselves.

There are two ways to make this happen. First, you buy the seedlings until they grow so you can harvest the. Second, you buy them fully grown and then just plant it into the ground.

Most people prefer the first because it makes them proud to know that what is served on the table was done from scratch.

In both cases, you have to prepare the soil, use compost and make sure that these are safe from threats such as insects, weeds and other animals that will eat what you have planted.

You can fight these with other animals, insects, organic fertilizers, deodorant soap and a few other items which you can find out after doing some research.

For those who don’t have a big garden, they can try growing these organically grown vegetables in containers. They require more water than those planted in the soil so give doses frequently.

There is no doubt that organic vegetables and other products are important these days. If you value your health and those of your family you can buy these from the store or plant it yourself.

For those who decide to buy organically grown vegetables, remember to wash before cooking them. This will remove any harmful substances or residue that may still be there which is invisible to the naked eye.
